Week 27 – Skein N⁰. 27 Two By Two Knit Hat For Men

For a while now, Jason has wanted a new hat because his old hat had disappeared and was a wee bit on the scratchy side. Last weekend though I actually found his Antler toque but I figured he could use an up-date. On my way home from work on Friday I swung into the yarn store and bought two yarns with alpaca for increased softness. He picked the mustard, so now I get to make myself something with the green skein! The mustard skein is called Moonshine by Juniper Moon Farm and is a mix of baby alpaca, wool, and silk so it should be super soft and extra warm.

On Saturday, I forgot to ask Jason to pick a hat pattern before he went to the gym so I browsed Ravelry looking for great hats for males.  I picked out a few and when he got home he selected the Two By Two hat by Ann Gagnon.

Using four needles to knit a man's hat.

The pattern was easy because it is a simple rib, but the yarn was slippery to get started. I had to cast-on twice because the yarn wasn’t playing nice with my circular needle, so I decided to use double pointed needles. The decrease seemed to be off by one stitch on the first decrease row so I did what made sense.

Left-over skein of yarn with ceramic mug by Jason Garber of Domestic Strata I always stress out a little bit about rather a skein is really enough for a hat, but it always works out fine. I actually could of knit a few more rows.  I am trying to come up with a project that will use all of my skein leftovers from this whole 52 skein project.

Jason made both of the cups shown above.  I am so impressed with how far he has come in just one year of ceramics.

Have a great week,

Madeleine
